How to Wax a Mustache
If you’re looking to take your mustache game to the next level, it’s time to start using mustache wax. Mustache wax is used by men who want to style and train their mustache growth. Some men like to use wax to retain their preferred style while others like to be adventurous and try out new ones.
Today, we will look at choosing the right mustache wax and how to apply it to get a killer look. You’ll also learn a bit about the different styles you can achieve by using mustache wax. To learn more life hacks such as this, check out the Dr. Squatch blog.
Picking the Right Mustache Wax
There are several things to consider when choosing your mustache wax. First, what are the ingredients? Many waxes use petroleum jelly as the main ingredient. While serviceable, they can be a bit messy and are not the best for your skin.
- Choose mustache wax that has natural ingredients, especially if you are using natural soaps already like those from Dr. Squatch. Waxes with natural ingredients will help nourish your beard hair and are generally less messy than petroleum-based waxes.
- Next, you want to pick the right strength for your wax. Your options are as follows:
- Light/Soft – This is good for short mustaches
- Medium – Start here for longer mustaches
- Strong – Want to rock a handlebar mustache? This is your best bet.
- The scent of your wax is also important. You want a scent that is not overpowering. If you’re someone who cannot stand strong smells, consider going odorless. Since your mustache is right under your nose, any scent will appear stronger, so choose accordingly.
Applying Mustache Wax
When properly applied, mustache wax is great at helping you style your mustache.
- To start, you should keep your wax at room temperature. Depending on how easily your wax softens, you may or may not want to heat it a bit before use. Some people will blow-dry their way on low a few seconds, but don’t overdo it as it could liquify the wax.
- Next, if you use natural beard oil, do not apply it before applying beard wax. Beard oil will break down the wax and make it difficult to use.
Applying mustache wax is relatively easy, and below are the basic steps for doing so:
- Open the container and scrape some wax off using your thumbnail.
- Rub the wax back and forth between your thumb and fingers to warm the wax and make it workable.
- Begin applying the wax to your mustache starting from the center and working out towards the tips. Work in the wax as you would beard oil or natural conditioner.
- If your mustache is extra-long or thick, you may need additional wax. If so, repeat the previous steps as necessary.
- Begin your styling. If needed, run your mustache comb through your mustache to help shape your mustache or to help evenly distribute the wax.
- Check out your results. Examine your mustache to see if you have achieved the desired result. If so, you’re done. Otherwise, repeat the steps above as necessary.
If your mustache looks a bit greasy after applying wax, don’t worry. This will change as the wax dries and hardens. Should it continue to stay greasy, it’s possible you used too much, or you need to switch to a wax with more natural ingredients.
What Looks Can You Rock With Mustache Wax?
Many men grow the same type of mustache they saw their dad use, or they try and rock a generic mustache that lacks style. Mustache wax can help you to create a myriad of unique looks. Below are some of the looks you can create using mustache wax.
- Chevron – If you have straighter hair, the chevron mustache is a classic style that’s perhaps best worn by Tom Selleck during his Magnum P.I. days.
- Cowboy – You ever wanted to look like Sam Elliot or a classic cowboy? This one is for you. A medium hold wax should achieve this look. Don’t worry about perfection with this one as it’s supposed to look a little rugged.
- Fu Manchu – If you ever wanted to look like a comic book supervillain, this is the one for you. The Fu Manchu will certainly take a strong wax to keep its shape.
- Horseshoe Mustache – Hulk Hogan is one of the most famous people to rock this look. This one takes a while to grow out and works better for those that can grow thick mustaches.
- Walrus – Similar to the Chevron. This one is bushier and can come down below the lip of the mouth. It can also look similar to a bushier handlebar mustache.
- Handlebar – The classic handlebar mustache typically has an upward twirl towards the end. With time and training, you can turn that twirl into a full loop. Former MLB superstar Rollie Finger has one of the most iconic handlebar mustaches in history.
Practice Makes Perfect When Using Mustache Wax
Some men become quickly discouraged when they start using mustache wax because they are to able to get the look they desire right away. Mustache wax is both a skill and an art form, and few of us learn new skills without extensive practice.
Learning how to apply mustache wax the right way is going to take time and practice. In some cases, you may find that you will have to switch brands to find one that works for you. It is also a good idea to take set aside some time to practice using mustache wax rather than try using it just before your big date or social outing.
The same concepts apply when trying to style your mustache. If you are going for a totally new look, multiple attempts may be necessary to get things right. You should also honestly evaluate your beard and facial hair. Is your hair coarse or thick enough to rock the look you want? You may have to consider a different style if all attempts to create your desired look fail.
Now that you have the basics about how to pick and choose beard wax, it’s time to start practicing. Like anything in life, you have to put in the time and effort to get that killer look, so take the time necessary to perfect your beard waxing technique.
